I have now started putting plants on the new top shelf in the orchid room. I have initially placed cattleyas and laelias on the shelf, primarily because I think they need the increased light. One can see from the picture that the plants do get some direct sun through the skylights in the room, but only for an hour or so each day. In the summer, the direct sun will be higher in the sky, and the skylights will admit the light more toward the base of the plants.
The plants should get increased temperatures also at this level.
We’ll see how it goes. The shelf should hold about 10 plants.
