I purchased this Stanhopea Wardii from Brookside Orchids at Orchids in the Park in San Francisco on July 23rd. It is a large plant in a 10″ net pot with 10 leaves, one new leaf growth, and two spikes. It looks like the first flowering spike will have approximately 6-8 flowers, so it should be spectacular.
This is a new world orchid, native to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela. It common habitat is a higher altitude one, growing in warm to cool cloud forests from 2600 – 5300 feet (800-1600 meters) in elevation. I have placed it on the south side of the greenhouse where it will get morning sun and bright shade for the remaining parts of the day.
It should be a good plant for me.
