Phragmipedium Don Wimber

DonWimber112916.JPGI purchased this Phragmipedium Don Wimber from Paph Paradise at the Gold Country Orchids open house on Saturday, November 19th.  I attended a lecture on “Getting the Most out of your Paphiopedilums”, after which Paph Paradise was offering good prices on their orchids.

This Phragmipedium is in very good condition.  It has multiple growths, and is in bloom.  It is a sequential bloomer, and has a second bloom ready to go, as well as a second branch that is in bud.  It is planted in a bark/perlite/charcoal mix.

I learned a lot from the lecture on Paphs/Phrags.

  • They should be repotted each year.
  • Repotted in a bark mix.  The perlite is to create more air in the mix, and the charcoal to absorb some of the impurities in the water (I don’t need to add this as I am using RO water)
  • Good light.  Mottled leaf Paphs can use lower light.  They grow well under artificial lighting.
