Oncidium Sweet Sugar ‘Lemon Drop’ is in bloom

Everyone should have one of these to brighten up their greenhouse. I purchased this Oncidium Sweet Sugar ‘Lemon Drop’ from Brookside Orchids at Orchids in the Park in San Francisco on Saturday, July 22, 2017. It struggled until I moved it into the greenhouse, where it has reliably bloomed each year.

The brilliant yellow color is noticed immediately by everyone who enters the greenhouse.

Odontoglossum Tribbles x Odontioda Trisch is in bloom

I acquired this Odontoglossum Tribbles x Odontioda Trisch from Bob Hamilton on my visit to his greenhouse on September 29, 2019.  It is planted in a four-inch pot and is in bloom with a 2′ spike with a dozen flowers.

This plant’s heritage is mostly Odontoglossum nobile (pescatorei) and the flowers are similar to those of nobile, except for the spotting. Not large flowers, but very pretty.

Cyrtochilum hibrido?

I acquired this Cyrtochilum from Equaflor-A at either a San Francisco or Santa Barbara Show. It is a young Cirtochilum which has developed two 18″ spikes, each with four flowers.

The label in the pot says “Cyrtochilum hibrido, which probably means that it was a hybrid bred by Equaflor-A that somehow slipped into an orchid show sale. I can’t find any information on the plant, and am in correspondence with the nursery to see if we can determine the parents of this cross.

The flowers are very vibrant in their colors, more so than similar cyrtochilums in my collection.

It turns out that the cross is Odontoglossum cirrhosum x Cyrtochilum ionodon.

Odontioda Joe’s Drum ‘Noe Valley’ is in bloom

I acquired this Odontioda Joe’s Drum ‘Noe Valley’ from Bob Hamilton on a visit to his greenhouse in September of 2019. It has grown well from the two back bulbs that it had when I moved it into the greenhouse.

The patterning on this flower is very good. The color stands out from across the greenhouse (as well as the yellow lip. It has six flowers on a 12″ spike.

Degarmoara Shibumi ‘Purple Rain’ is in bloom

I purchased this plant from Brookside Orchids at the Pacific Orchid Exhibition in San Francisco in February of 2020. This is a very common oncidium intergeneric orchid, but the color was quite good and I needed an “expendable” orchid to experiment with (I was interested in the differences in growth between different areas of my greenhouse). It has done well, and i now in spike, with eight flowers on an 18″ spike.

Aerangis Luteo-alba is in bloom

I purchased this Aerangis Luteo-alba from Gold Country Orchids at their open house in the fall of 2018. It had gone through two 114 degree days in their greenhouse when the power failed in their area, but looked like it had possibilities. I tis mounted on a wood slab and placed on the east side of the greenhouse, where it gets good morning light and moderate-diffused light the rest of the day. It currently has over 100 blossoms on 12 spikes, and is (obviously) doing beautifully.

This plant gets a mist each day, and water twice-a-week in the summer (one-a-week in the winter).

Odontonia Yellow Parade ‘Alpine’

I purchased this Odtna. Yellow Parade ‘Alpine’ (Floricultura x 6801) from eBay vendor letstalkplants in September of 2020. It is an old Orchid Zone plant (Z9562).

The history behind this plant is quite extensive. In this case, the plant has a small amount of Miltoniopsis (Alexandra Dumas) in it, but it mainly includes several generations of Odontioda. Thus it is classified as an Odtna. (Now probably called Oncidiopsis)

I have been looking for yellow Odonts. This one has really good color.

Macradenia multiflora

I purchased this Macradenia multiflora from eBay vendor orchids-forever in April of 2020. It came in a three-inch pot, and I placed it with my other small/seedling orchids in lower light in the canopy side of the greenhouse. It is a small plant, and it expected it to grow slowly in its first year with me. But, a week ago, I noticed that it had bloomed (the inflorence had grown away from the light).

It is a intermediate to warm growing epiphytic orchid from Brazil, with non-resupinate (upside-down) flowers on a pendant spike which is about six inches long. The flowers are right=side-up on the pendant inflorence.

Dendrobium jaintianum

I purchased this Dendrobium jaintianum from Marni Turkel in September of 2017. It was a gangly plant when I received it, which divided itself into two sections when it was repotted. I planted one section in a bark mix, and it did not survive. The other section was mounted, and placed on the side of the net pot of my large hanging Oncidium Jiuhbao Gold which sits up high in the southern section of the greenhouse.

It has grown slowly for the first two years, but has decided to bloom this year — my first bloom of the plant. The growth of the plant was much better this year.

Miltassia Pelican Lake ‘Everglades’ AM/AOS

I purchased this Miltassia Pelican Lake ‘Everglades’ AM/AOS from Gold Country Orchids at their open house in the Fall of 2019. It is currently in bloom with six closely spaced flowers on a two-foot inflorence. The first two or three flowers did not fully develop, with the petals not opening correctly, but the last few flowers have been well developed.

As I look up the plant in OrchidWiz, it is basically a hibrid between Miltassia candida, Miltassia spectablis, Miltassia clowesii, and Brassia verrucosa. These have been combined through several generations, most obviously from Miltassia Anne Warne (which is spectablis x (clowesii x spectablis). My plant was a division from a -much- larger plant in the Gold Country Greenhouse, and grew slowlly in the canopy part of my greenhouse.
