Odontoglossum harryanum

I acauired this Odontoglossum harryanum this past year from Ecuagenera. I planted it into a clay pot with small bark and placed it on the east side of the greenhouse. It now has two spikes with several beautiful flowers per spike.

This is a Colombian plant, and a pretty one.

Vuylstekeara Nova

I acquired this Vuylstekeara Nova (Oda Samares x Miltonia spectabilis var alba) from Bob Hamilton during my visit to his greenhouse in September of 2020.

The Miltonia in this cross gives the plant some warmth tolerance, and it should grow well in intermediate conditions. This is a first bloom seedling with only three flowers on a short spike. It is currently in a three-inch pot.

I had first acquired this orchid in August of 2017, placing it in a wooden basket and hanging in my solarium. But it did not take there. I believe that it was too bright (I have learned that the Miltonias do better in lesser light).

It is a beautiful flower.

Odm. Venillia “Madison Heights” x nobile “Monarch” 4n

I acquired this Odm. Venillia “Madison Heights” x nobile “Monarch” 4n from Bob Hamilton during my visit to his greenhouse in Septmber 2020.

It is a first bloom seedling with six flowers on a one-foot spike. The flower shown is all white, but the others all have one or two small maroon spots on the lower sepals. The flowers are medium/small, but may be larger in subsequent bloomings.

I note that the tag has ORYZ 6D tagged onto the name of the plant. I will research this to see what it means.

Odontioda Echanson ‘Abic’

I acquired this Odontioda Echanson ‘Abic’ from Bob Hamilton on a visit to his greenhouse in September of 2020.

This is an older Odontioda cross, first registered in 1961. It has a three-foot spike, with 14 flowers, growing in a four-inch pot. The colors are not as dramatic as in the Castle de Stro-type Odontiodas, but it is still great color in the greenhouse.

Odontoglossum Pescalo x Nicky Strauss

Pescalo083120.jpgI acquired this Odontoglossum Pescalo x Nicky Strauss from Bob Hamilton in my visit to his greenhouse in September of 2019.  It is an Odontoglossum hybrid, crossing two basic white=background orchids.  it is tough to find pictures of Nicky Strauss, but it seems to be a well-used parent.  Pescalo tends to have a purple blush on the sepals, and a solid purple white-fringed lip.  The purple blush does not show up in this plant, but we have maroon dots on the sepals.

This is a large plant, with a spike about three feet high.  Ten flowers.

Odontioda (Cordatum ‘Midas’ x nebulosum alba ‘Beckendorfs’) is in bloom

Cardatum083120.jpgI purchased this Odontioda (Cordatum ‘Midas’ x nebulosum alba ‘Beckendorfs’) from eBay vendor letstalkplants on December 23, 2016.  It seems to bloom at about this time each year.  For some reason, I really like this flower.

Cattleya Caudebec (4N) is in bloom

Caudebeck082720.jpgI acquired this Cattleya Caudebec (4N) from California Orchids in my visit to their greenhouses in September of 2019.  I usually don’t try to grow cattleyas, as I have a cool/intermediate greenhouse, and the cattleyas must go very high in the greenhouse where it is the warmest.  However this plant just jumped into my hand as I was leaving the greenhouse, and it has grown well when placed within a couple of feet of the roof.

Aliceara Hilo Ablaze ‘Hilo Gold’ HCC/AOS is in bloom

Ablaze082720.jpgI purchased this Aliceara Hilo Ablaze ‘Hilo Gold’ HCC/AOS from Brookside Orchids in San Francisco at Orchids in the Park on July 23, 2016.  It has been a reliable bloomer for me, but struggled this year after I potted it into new media.  It seems to have revived well, and has two spikes with flowers this year.

Note: Aliceara = [Brassia x Miltonia x Oncidium]

Odontioda Castle De Stro ‘Tiffany’ is in bloom

Castle082720.jpgI purchased this Odontioda Castle De Stro ‘Tiffany’ from the collection of Tim Brydon during my visit to Bob Hamilton’s Greenhouse on Sunday, April 15, 2018.  It initially did not do well for me, but after repotting into new media, and semi-defeating the bugs it had, it has grown well and bloomed twice this year (February).

I like the dramatic color changes in this flower.  It is one that attracted me to this plant.

Odontioda Star Trek “Eclipse”

StarTrek073020.jpgI acquired this Odontioda Star Trek “Eclipse” from Bob Hamilton on my visit to his greenhouse in September of 2019.  It is currently in bloom with 10 flowers on an 18″ spike.  It is sitting on the east side of the greenhouse, behind the 80% shade cloth on the east wall.

According to OrchidWiz, this is a cross between Odontioda Phoenix and Odontioda Shelley, and was registered in 1988.
